This is not some warm and fuzzy recollection of wonderful or surreal activities I participated in while spending my night hours fitfully asleep, but rather about an unsettling pattern of certain things and places not being where they should be, mixed in with the inability to remember where I supposedly left yet other things, both yielding exasperation inasmuch as this is rarely a problem during my waking life.
Difficult to understand but easy to interpret, I’ve had the recurring dream of difficulty in finding the entrance to and subsequently the requisite track at Penn Station to board my train home, not because it’s not there somewhere but because it’s not where it had always been, causing me to miss the initial one I intended on catching as well as a few subsequent ones, before finally making my way to a different track to catch a much later train which was not even on the schedule. These episodes followed a pair of dreams with a substantially similar situation occurring, but at an airport, unable to find the right gate make a flight to California, but then also unable to even find a next flight to get on. What was waiting in California I don’t know and I’m still waiting for some reentry, resolution and understanding.
Last week, the weirdness continued to elevate a few notches when while asleep I was driving in Manhattan, specifically heading south on the west side, looking for a parking spot convenient to my former office on 7th Avenue and 36th Street. Why I was driving in the first place, and insanely harboring the expectation of finding street parking on a weekday, were things that were inexplicable but happening nonetheless. After circling the streets between 36th and 39th Streets and 6th and 9th Avenues a few times, it began to rain and I decided to pull over to an illegal spot temporarily, and after grabbing my briefcase and umbrella, got out and set off on foot looking for a garage after deciding to abandon my search for street parking, then getting soaked because my umbrella was stuck in the case and I couldn’t access it. After walking around a while and finally finding a garage with a vacancy at 6th and 36th I told the attendant I’d be right back with my car, something he found odd, given most drivers show up at a garage with the car which needed to be parked, but shrugged it off.
My relief was short-lived….I couldn’t remember where I left my car. In my frustration and increasing panic I never took note of where it was so the only thing I could do was walk up and down the streets within that grid until I found it. Then out of nowhere two people I knew through business called to ask whether they could meet me, only each wanted to do it at the exact same time the next morning, creating a dilemma. What then struck me was those two guys knew each other well and likely coordinated their calls to further fuck with my head, not knowing I was already twisted enough that day, me not taking into account it was probably a joke given who they were. But it was something I didn’t find particularly funny at that moment as my head was totally wrapped around finding my car.
Which did not happen as I suddenly woke up with neither car nor resolution (once again), further and weirdly complicated by those two guys.
Symbolism galore, and I have plans to check into some dream analysis as I’m 100% sure it’s all interconnected, relatively sure it ain’t all that good, and totally unsure about those two guys….
